Location
The 2021 GlycoMIP Summer School was held remotely via Zoom. Future Summer Schools will be held in person on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, or at the University of Georgia’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center in Athens, Georgia.
Cost
There was no charge for participating in GlycoMIP Summer School 2021, though pre‑registration was required.
Who Should Attend
- Graduate students and post‑doctoral researchers new to glycomaterials who seek an overview of the science or wish to use GlycoMIP facilities
- Undergraduate students interested in pursuing graduate research in glycomaterials
- Advanced researchers in industry or academia interested in synthesis, analytical, or computational capabilities
- Industry scientists new to glycomaterials science seeking an overview of the field
Participants should have completed a science or engineering degree, or be close to completion in the case of undergraduate participants, as familiarity with basic chemical concepts was assumed.

What You Will Learn
Glycomaterials are natural materials containing or comprising carbohydrates. Understanding the relationships between molecular structure and biological function promises to catalyze advances in human health and environmental sustainability.
GlycoMIP, a National Science Foundation Materials Innovation Platform, accelerates glycomaterials science through leading‑edge research, education, training, and a national user facility.
The inaugural GlycoMIP Summer School covered fundamental and applied concepts across the MIP’s research and service areas:
- Glycomaterials: overview of the current state of the science
- Synthesis: glycan synthesis and automated glycan synthesizers provided by GlycoUniverse
- Analytical: mass spectrometry, NMR, surface characterization, binding assays, rheology, and optical spectroscopy
- Modeling: computational methods and capabilities
The program employed synchronous learning via Zoom, with two topics covered daily. Instruction was organized into two two‑hour sessions each day, with an extended break between morning and afternoon sessions. Day Five met once in the morning only.
Upon completion, participants gained a deeper understanding of glycomaterials science and GlycoMIP’s synthesis, analytical, and modeling capabilities.

CEU Credit
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) were available for participants who required them. An additional registration process was required, and attendance was taken during each session to ensure accurate credit assignment.
