2024 Short Course Instructor List

About the Instructors

Dr. Cassandra Callmann is an Assistant Professor and CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research program is centered on using synthetic glycans and glycopolymers to elucidate the relationship between glycan macro- and supramolecular structure and biological function.

Ms. Linda Caudill is the managing director of GlycoMIP and works for the Fralin Life Sciences Institute.  She has oversight of GlycoMIP’s education and outreach programs, as well as business functions for the program.  She will facilitate the short course and make sure everyone stays on schedule.

Dr. Kevin Edgar is a Professor of Biomaterials in the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech. His GlycoMIP work focuses on design, synthesis, and characterization of polysaccharide derivatives, and probing structure-property-performance relationships, towards important and demanding biomedical applications.

Dr. Richard Helm is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Director of Core Services and Research Resources for the Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech.  He is also the GlycoMIP Director of User Program and specializes in applying mass spectrometry tools in the fields of metabolomics and proteomics.

Dr. Saniya Khan is Technical Manager of GlycoMIP at Virginia Tech. She works on synthesis and characterization of polysaccharide derivatives.

Ms. Caylyn McNaul is the laboratory technician for the GlycoMIP Synthesis and Characterization at VT facilities.

Ms. Lauren Mills is the Program Coordinator for GlycoMIP.

Dr. Jia Niu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Boston College. His research focuses on developing bio-inspired chemical approaches to sustainable biomaterials including synthetic polysaccharides, glycomimetics, and non-natural nucleic acids.

Dr. Nicola Pohl is Associate Dean of Natural and Mathematical Science and Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington.  She has research expertise in analytical chemistry, chemical biology and organic chemistry.

Dr. Ryan Porell is a Research Chemist at the Naval Research Laboratory Center for Biomolecular Science & Engineering in Washington D.C. His research focuses on the design of piezoelectric, photo-responsive, and ultrasound-responsive glyconanoparticles to control cellular responses in wound healing and glymphatic system applications.

Dr. Maren Roman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech and is the Director of GlycoMIP.  Her research focuses on the molecular properties and potential applications of carbohydrate-based materials.

Dr. Breeanna Urbanowicz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Georgia and a faculty member at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center.  Her expertise is in molecular plant sciences and structural biology.
